Some Approaches to Link Building

There are many different approaches to internet marketing , and within that, there are many approaches to link building. Some are more effective than others and some are also more ethical than others. The main advantages of ethical practices are that they are sustainable, they show your business in the best possible light and they do not link you with unscrupulous businesses. The main advantages of unethical practices are that they tend to produce quick results and are often cheap.

Perhaps the most professional (and ethical) method of link building is the one that takes the longest. In this view of link building, genuine relationships are formed between the business that is promoting itself and the authoritative website from which it hopes to derive a link, and thus some value. Building links in this way represents a significant investment of time, often starting with a few helpful forum comments by the business that is angling for a link and progressing to regular personal correspondence. When the relationship is ripe, the business that is promoting itself could offer to write a guest post on the popular blog on the authority site – this can not only pass value through the link, it can also pass a high volume of traffic if the content is of a high quality and the readership interested.

At the other end of the spectrum is the process of building links illegally through hacking. Some extremely reckless link builders hack into authoritative domains using any number of methods. In some cases these hackers are able to generate new web pages that contain links to the website that is being promoted. These pages can be difficult for a webmaster to detect, particularly on busy websites, but they are nevertheless able to pass authority from the valued domain to the one being promoted. This tactic is unlikely to be used by a legitimate SEO company and is generally reserved for the most unethical independent practitioners.
